What Is Pigmentation, and What Causes It?
Hyperpigmentation is where areas of skin become darker due to excess melanin production — showing up as patches, uneven tone or dark spots. Common triggers include sun exposure, hormonal changes (such as melasma), inflammation, certain medications and the natural ageing process.
Some of the most effective ingredients for improving pigmentation are retinoids, vitamin C, niacinamide and exfoliating acids such as glycolic or salicylic acid, with prescription-strength options like hydroquinone sometimes used too. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 matters just as much — UV exposure can stimulate further pigment production and undo the benefits of treatment.
To get significant and lasting improvements to your pigmentation, a combination of good quality consistent home skin care, a broad spectrum sunscreen every day all year round, and in-clinic treatments, such as Wow Fusion or chemical peels is required.
